The album was tracked at Miner Street Recordings in Philadelphia with John Agnello, known for working with some of the most iconic musicians of the last 25 years, including Dinosaur Jr. and Sonic Youth. For Agnello, it was Crutchfield’s voice that drew him in. “The first demo song I heard was Fade. The melodies, the way she sings it, the way she turns the melody, and the way she goes note to note is literally beautiful.

Singers - you either have it or you don’t. At Agnello’s suggestion, the group recorded most of the music live to enhance their unity in a way that gives the album a fuller sound compared to past releases, resulting in one of Waxahatchee’s most guitar-driven releases to date. “My experience working with John was genuinely life-changing,” says Crutchfield.

“We had such a great connection right off the bat, and I really feel like he was always looking out for me. Over the course of his career he recorded six albums, wrote six books, and published hundreds of shorter texts in outlets ranging from Rolling Stone and The Village Voice to the Coleman Chronicle and Democrat-Voice, in addition to founding and operating, with his wife Judy Gordon, Wowapi Press and the underground country music journal Picking Up the Tempo.

Along the way he cultivated close friendships with fellow Texan songwriters such as Lubbockites Terry Allen, Butch Hancock, and Tommy X. Brazen, sassy, and
utterly infectious, it was a reintroduction of sorts for the eldest daughter of Frank
Sinatra, who had been struggling to find a spotlight of her own amid a changing
musical landscape. Over in the UK in June to play a few dates with the Reds, Pinks and Purples. "At the frayed bottom-edge of Indiana – just a moderate bike ride north of Louisville, Kentucky – multiinstrumentalist, artist and songwriter Ryan Davis’’ Americana-noir soundwaves have been emanating for years in a myriad of forms. As driving force for the lauded State Champion, long-running member of Tropical Trash, administrator of the esoteric and excellent Cropped Out festival, and lone proprietor of the Sophomore Lounge label, Davis lays down his first proper ‘solo’ release with Dancing On The Edge, a rich, 2LP tapestry of tunes that absolutely glows over seven expansive cuts. It’s a pure collage of modernity and heritage. After a period of introspection spent re-immersing himself in his drawing & painting practice, as well as his newfound delvings into instrumental music, Davis’ sea change was imminent. “I wasn't sure I would ever make another record of ‘song’ songs,” he says, “but last year I started writing again and it eventually took the shape of the record at hand. I worked painstakingly hard on the material.
It felt virtually impossible to complete for a bulk of the time I spent trying to enter into it, but the process pulled me out of a strange place. I was eventually able to live inside of the songs enough to understand the world within them – to ultimately help shape them into what I understood them to be.” Indeed, there’s a load of inspiration captured in the grooves with Ryan’s unfiltered, folk-traditioned approach to poetic twists-of-tongue meeting head on with sublime instrumentation. Recorded in early 2023 with help both in-studio and remotely from peers like Joan Shelley, Catherine Irwin (Freakwater), Will Lawrence (Felice Brothers, Gun Outfit, John Early), Jenny
Rose (Giving Up), Christopher May (Mail the Horse), Elisabeth Fuchsia (Footings, Bonnie "Prince" Billy), and Aaron Rosenblum (Son of Earth, Sapat), 'Dancing on the Edge' draws backup perhaps primarily from Davis' tight-knit drinking buddies-cum-cast of collaborators in Equipment Pointed Ankh (records on Astral Editions, Bruit Direct Disques, Torn Light) – a five-headed hive-mind from which he drew
impetus for his own foray into more abstract and improvisational terrain these past few years under the Roadhouse alias. The results herein are melancholic, gentle, minimal yet colorful in mood: a lilting highway accompaniment of crisp instrumentation and a relaxed, amiable approach to vocals with rhapsodic wordsmithery. Fans of the aforementioned artists as well as those of Souled American, David Berman, Kurt Vile and ‘Comes A Time’-era Neil should all easily find bounty. While bare-boned and uncluttered in presentation, many of these pieces track over 6 minutes allowing a fair amount of expansiveness. Dancing On The Edge stares down into the navel
of the American Experience underbelly with a fair amount of outward reach. Besides the Kosmische-synth and violin stabs reaching into a European element, stately organ swells build a musical bridge between 1969 Southern California and Felt’s latter era smooth moves, with layers of intelligent gesture taking this well beyond the realm of its archetypal indie troubadour/acoustic songwriter tag.

Music and mint juleps never went down so well together." “This is the sound of someone bearing a torch.” - Bill Callahan //

"Davis’ talents are immense: vivid imagery and clever one-liners pulling epiphanies from the sacred, mundane, and profane." (Rolling Stone) //

"On the latest and perhaps greatest notch in the storied songwriter’s belt, Ryan Davis is tipping his beer to a world in moral and constitutional decline." (Aquarium Drunkard, Best of 2023) //

"(His solo debut) Dancing on the Edge is singular and strong enough to
put Davis in league with some of the very best American songwriters of the past and present. Besides fine production from Joe Boyd and assistance from folks like Fairport Convention's Richard Thompson and his unrelated bass counterpart from Pentangle, Danny Thompson, Drake also recruited school friend Robert Kirby to create most of the just-right string and wind arrangements. His own performance itself steered a careful balance between too-easy accessibility and maudlin self-reflection, combining the best of both worlds while avoiding the pitfalls on either side.

The result was a fantastic debut appearance, and if the cult of Drake consistently reads more into his work than is perhaps deserved, Five Leaves Left is still a most successful effort. Having grown out of the amiable but derivative styles captured on the long-circulating series of bootleg home recordings, Drake imbues his tunes with just enough drama -- world-weariness in the vocals, carefully paced playing, and more -- to make it all work. His lyrics capture a subtle poetry of emotion, as on the pastoral semi-fantasia of "The Thoughts of Mary Jane," which his soft, articulate singing brings even more to the full. Sometimes he projects a little more clearly, as on the astonishing voice-and-strings combination "Way to Blue," while elsewhere he's not so clear, suggesting rather than outlining the mood. Understatement is the key to his songs and performances' general success, which makes the combination of his vocals and Rocky Dzidzornu's congas on "Three Hours" and the lovely "'Cello Song," to name two instances, so effective. Yes, her forthcoming album is shaped by stories — ones about reproductive freedom, the double-edged sword of the pandemic, identity and ever-evolving belief systems that have shaped each of its 11 songs. It was paramount to the folk-feminist hero that listeners not be saddled with preconceived notions while diving into her 23rd album Unprecedented Sh!t. “I believe there is a rhyme and a reason as to why these songs have come together in this way now and I want people to experience this album as a journey, a piece of art, without being influenced by a cacophony of surrounding narratives.”

While many of DiFranco’s albums were made more insularly, she’s opened herself up to collaboration in recent years. Over the course of ten indie-leaning, alt-country tracks on 'Legacy', her latest album as Falcon Jane, she expounds on that origin story through the great archetypes of country music: the drinker, the vagabond, the absent father. She presents these characters with a clarity and empathy that feels almost transgressive a loving touch that crosses our rural / urban divides. But these are Sara's stories too: her rural childhood, her move to Toronto, her current home in the working class town of Shelburne, and her life on the road. She comes by it honest. And the transformation on 'Legacy' isn't just lyrical. Alongside producer José Contreras (By Divine Right), Falcon Jane refine their sound—pushing toward folk and country like contemporaries Waxahatchee and Angel Olsen. May's voice, the one constant from 2015's 'Alive n Well' EP, through the dream pop of her 2018 debut album 'Feelin' Freaky', to the sprawling indie rock of 2020's 'Faith', is more powerful here, sitting atop the warm, Nashville-leaning production. On my last visit to Tucker in the Belgian countryside, I picked my tea, as previously, from Marie-Claire’s great tray of assorted blends and was invited to choose my mug for the week. I apparently selected ‘Dave’s mug’ and was drinking ‘Dave’s English tea’. I felt very pleased, sat there with Tucker and his wife, next to the warm stove. Dave Evans is on this album. Why tell that story? Well Tucker's work is tied up with - and of equal importance to - his domestic life. His beloved wife and friends. This doesn't undermine his craft. I would say the opposite, that it affirms it and makes it uncompromised. Sure he could have been a wealthier man or more well known, but that is not the fuel. When in their home, next to the stove you feel a level of purity. That’s what fuels his work.

“We’re all so delicate & fragile it’s beyond belief” is a line from the spine tingling beauty of ‘It’s Beyond Belief’. It sits near the end of this strong set of songs, written by the 60 year old Song Poet as he casts his eye over what it is to be alive. The sentiment articulates the soul of this collection. Tucker undoubtedly took a brief break from recording whilst - among other things - setting up baseball in Belgium and raising a son. But his life in art just went on and still goes on, either alone or with friends. He built his own studio in 1971 and owns a guitar so there really is no stopping him. In this environment he has made some of his classics, the self titled (Black Album) stripped back minimal beauty from 1971 & Word Games, his electronic album from 1983. Music By River Words By Ear was also made in this environment. A wooden studio, in a wood, nestled on a little hill. Tucker & I curated this album pretty easily as it is clearly a session, a collection, an album. I believe a very different album than any he's released before. His sixty year old voice in fine form, mature, passionate, heartbreaking and strong. We hope you enjoy it as much as we do. -Nick Holton

“Zimmerman conjures up a kind of Arcadian folk surrealism that is utterly his own” MOJO Andrew Male

Rough and Rowdy Ways is Bob Dylan’s first album of original material in 8 years and his first since becoming the only songwriter to receive the Nobel Prize for Literature, in 2016.

Its 10 tracks include the three new songs released this spring: the album’s lead-off track, "I Contain Multitudes", the nearly 17-minute epic "Murder Most Foul" and "False Prophet".

//cdn.shopify.com/s/files/1/0764/5803/3464/files/7d3cb66a-c34c-4ad4-9aca-594cc15bc918_thumbnail_4096.webp?v=1751036639
crosby-stills-and-nash-crosby-stills-and-nash
Crosby, Stills and Nash - Crosby, Stills and Nash

Originally released on may 29, 1969, Crosby, Stills and Nash remains one of rock 'n' roll's most impressive debuts. It was big news in 1969 when former key members of the Byrds, Buffalo Springfield, and the Hollies - three of the finest bands of the '60s - splintered off to form their own trio. Despite their already-proven talents, few could have imagined the gossamer vocal blend that would become the trademark of supergroup Crosby, Stills and Nash.
