THE LOW-DOWN

What’s the deal with the Book Club?

Dead Sea Book Club is a monthly book subscription where all members read the same book each month, carefully chosen by Nicola - our experienced bookseller here at Dead Sea Collective. We then share our thoughts in our online community space. Each month, you will receive:

• A paperback copy of the monthly book from our thoughtfully curated reading list (with delivery cost included)
• Access to our online discussion community each month (please note - you will need a Facebook account to join the monthly discussion)
• Monthly discussion prompts, posted one per day from mid-month, to help you engage with and think around the book.

(Note: The book is yours to keep or pass on as you wish).

Is this the right book club for me?
Dead Sea Book Club is perfect for you if you're looking for:

• A structured reading rhythm to get you back into reading, or steer you gently out of your reading comfort zone.
• Someone to take the responsibility of choosing a book away from you, and you're open to reading a wide range of genres.
• Connection with other readers online, on your own terms, in a supportive and welcoming way.
• Written conversation without pressure; our discussion is asynchronous and takes place in Facebook group chats so you can access it anytime and can join in whenever suits you best - no requirement to finish by a certain day, no fixed meetings.
• Permission to read a good book, guilt-free and with a purpose.

Ideal whether you’re joining from home, on holiday, or around the world.

What Dead Sea Book Club is NOT:

This is not our in-person book club - but we do have one of those! See FAQs for more details.
• We do not meet 'live' online, all the chat is written as comments or posts in our Facebook group.
• It is NOT a flashback to GCSE English Lit - no forced contributions, no fancy literary language, no requirement to read aloud.
• A drain on your time and energy - everything is on YOUR TERMS; you get to decide how much time you have to contribute and how much you want to engage. We are here to support you on your reading journey and cheer you on!
• A huge, scary, faceless book club machine - it's me, I'm Nicola. I love to read and I hate pretentious book chat. Books are for everyone and everyone's opinion of a book is like a little sprinkle of magic to me, I cherish them all! Our club is small so you won't feel overwhelmed or lost in the crowd.

FAQs

We read predominantly fiction titles suitable for a general audience; everything from literary fiction and light fantasy to historical fiction, classics and thrillers, and all the things in between. We include at least two new paperback releases each year and will also feature Welsh authors. We occasionally read a memoir or other narrative non-fiction.

Here's what we read in 2025, to give you an idea:

Jan - Small Pleasures by Clare Chambers
Feb - The Sirens by Emilia Hart
Mar - The Well of Loneliness by Radclyffe Hall
April - Here One Moment by Liane Moriarty
May - You Are Here by David Nicholls
June - Butter by Asako Yuzuki
July/Aug - Life Impossible by Matt Haig (read over two months for summer)
Sept - The Salt Path by Raynor Winn
Oct - Rock, Paper, Scissors by Alice Feeney
Nov - Until August by Gabriel Garcia Marquez
Dec - The Herd by Emily Edwards

If you join book club prior to the 10th of the month, we will send you the current month's book (e.g. if you order on the 8th of February, you will receive February's book choice, sent asap so that you can join the discussion when it opens on the 15th).

If you join after the 10th of the month, your first book will be NEXT month's choice (e.g. if you order on the 14th April, your first book will be May's choice, which will be dispatched on the 1st of May).

The online discussion takes place in our private Facebook group (therefore you will need a Facebook account to access the discussion).

The discussion takes place asynchronously (i.e. it is not live) and is text-based. Prompts will be posted in the group from the 15th of the month, and you are free to respond to them in your own time. We also encourage you to introduce yourself to the group and respond to points raised by others in the group.

This page is for the online book club ONLY and does not include attendance at an in-person book club. However, the 12-month option includes an invitation to our Book Club Christmas Party, held in Pembrokeshire, if you'd like to meet some of your fellow Book Club crew in person.

We do host a monthly in-person book club in Solva, Pembrokeshire. This is currently full to new members, but if you are interested in joining please drop us an email at thebookstoppembs@hotmail.com and we will add you to the waitlist.

Prior to dispatch each month, we will announce the next month's book. If you already have a copy, you can select an alternative book choice for your shipment that month.

You can do this up to:

- once in a three-month membership
- twice in a six-month membership
- four times in a twelve-month membership.

There will be fixed options for the alternative choices. Please note that if you select an alternative, the discussion will ONLY be for the primary book choice. Alternatives must be requested PRIOR to shipment, no exchanges can be offered once your parcel has left our premises (on the 1st of the month).
